Songbird

"Songbird" is a 2020 American dystopian thriller film directed by Adam Mason and written by Mason, Simon Boyes, and Michael Bay. The film takes place in a future where the COVID-19 pandemic has mutated into COVID-23, and the world is in its fourth year of lockdown. The story follows Nico Price, a young man with rare immunity, who must overcome martial law, murderous vigilantes, and a powerful family to reunite with his love, Sara Garcia. Along the way, Nico works with Lester, a man who specializes in delivering packages to wealthy individuals; Lita, Sara's grandmother; and Michael Dozer, a disabled war veteran who works for Lester as a drone operator. The film's cast includes KJ Apa as Nico Price, Sofia Carson as Sara Garcia; Craig Robinson as Lester; Peter Stormare as Emmett Harland; Alexandra Daddario as May; Demi Moore as Piper Griffin; and Bradley Whitford as William Griffin. The movie begins with Nico delivering packages while staying in virtual contact with Sara. When Lita begins to show symptoms of COVID-23 minhealth, Nico spends the night by Sara's door, promising to keep her from being taken away. The next day, he contacts Lester, realizing they transport illegal immunity wristbands, and gets trapped in a meeting with Emmett at a warehouse trying to get more information. After Lita dies, Emmett and his team arrive at Sara's building, forcing her into quarantine despite Nico's efforts to save her. The plot continues as William demands seeing May again but gets kicked out of the house by his wife, Piper after she overhears his phone call with May. May asks Michael if she can stay when William arrives and tries to kill her using a weaponized drone fatally shooting William. Then, Nico confronts Piper at the Griffins', obtaining a wristband for Sara thanks to their agreement. He returns to rescued Sara from Emmett just in time before she's put into quarantine They embrace for the first time while May and Michael start a virtual relationship together, and Piper frames William and Emmett for selling wristbands before Nico sends Lender his immunity bracelet as thanks. Understanding that Sara is immune too, they ride up the Pacific Coast Highway. The film explores themes of survival during a pandemic lockdown where infected individuals are taken away against their will and left to die or recover, while the healthy ones are afraid to lose their loved ones due to restrictions. It also touches on illegal activities, police states, and people's cravings for human connection despite technology. With a budget of $6 million, "Songbird," shot in Los Angeles over 22 days near the end of the pandemic received mixed reviews, praising its entertainment value but criticizing its lack of depth and emotional connection.
