Rocco Parondi, a young man from a poor rural Italian family, moves to Milan with his mother and three brothers in search of a better life. But as they try to make their way in the industrial city's fast-paced and unforgiving world, family bonds are stretched to the breaking point. Simone struggles to find his place, drawn to the world of boxing but unable to escape the pull of his troubled past. Rocco finds love with a prostitute named Nadia but their relationship is threatened by Simone's jealousy and possessiveness. As tensions between the brothers escalate, tragedy looms on the horizon.
