A luckless accountant named Eugene Proctor (Martin Short) is sent to Mexico by his wealthy businessman boss (Sam Wanamaker) to find his boss's daughter Valerie (Sheila Kelley), who has disappeared while on vacation. Eugene is partnered with a hard-boiled detective named Raymond Campanella (Danny Glover), who is skeptical of Eugene's ability to help find Valerie due to his extremely bad luck. As they travel to Mexico together, they endure a series of mishaps, including damaged luggage, bad hotel rooms, and bar fights with strangers. They eventually learn that Valerie was last seen with a local criminal named Frank Grimes (Scott Wilson), who spirits her away. Raymond and Eugene track Grimes down, but he is killed in a drive-by shooting before he can reveal where Valerie is. The police arrest Raymond and Eugene by mistake, and they later learn that Grimes had put Valerie on a plane to Mexico City that never arrived, and she is presumed dead in a plane crash. Despite the setbacks, Raymond and Eugene continue their search for Valerie, chartering a plane to look for the wreckage. During the flight, Eugene suffers an allergic reaction after being stung by a bee and swells to an enormous size. As he recovers at a field hospital., he talks to a local man who tells him about a strange woman who wandered into their village one day and ended up burning it down by accident. Musing that she might be Valerie, Raymond shows the man her picture, and he screams in terror. They head towards the burned village in search of Valerie but nearly drive off a cliff along the way. After barely escaping; Raymond has had enough of Eugene's dreadful luck. He reveals that the only reason Monosoff (Harry Shearer) thought Eugene's bad luck would somehow combine with Valarie's to create some good luck was why he was hired to find Valrie. Eugene tries to fight Raymond but only manages to knock himself out. When he wakes up, he finds himself in a bed next t Valerie(who has also suffered head wounds) They blithely walk off hand in hand , and raymond discovers their empty beds & spots them on the end of pier. He shouts at eugene and asks, "Valrie?" Hearing her name valerie recovers her memory. The film ends with ther pair floating down the river ona piece of pier that has broken off and headed toward a massive waterfall.
