In a remote Estonian village, where pagan beliefs still hold sway, the inhabitants struggle to survive amidst harsh winters, famine, and the threat of the plague. The villagers resort to thievery, trickery, and soul-selling to the devil to ensure their survival. Amidst this backdrop of hardship and superstition, a young woman named Liina harbors an unrequited love for a local boy named Hans. She seeks the help of a witch, Minna, who advises her to transform into a werewolf and spy on Hans, who is infatuated with a young baroness. Liina's attempts to win Hans' affection are thwarted by the Baroness' sleepwalking episodes, which almost lead to her death. Meanwhile, Hans tries to use a kratt (a magical automaton) to bring him the Baroness but ends up trading his soul to the devil instead. Liina intervenes to save the Baroness from falling to her death, but Hans mistakes her for the Baroness and asks her to marry him. In a dreamlike encounter, Liina reveals her true identity, and the two share a passionate kiss. However, their happiness is short-lived as the devil appears and demands payment for the kratt that Hans had used. Hans refuses to pay, and the devil kills him. Liina chases after the wagon bearing Hans' body, which is intertwined with funeral procession mourning Baroness died. As some of villagers looking for refuge at Church, where they sing Christian hymns in unison with prayers said by their priest, Liina walks into nearby river, contemplating her next steps in life.
