Moonlight

Moonlight (2016) is a poignant and powerful film that explores the life of a young African American man, Chiron, as he navigates his way through a tough neighborhood in Miami, struggling with his sexuality and identity. The film is divided into three chapters, each representing a different stage in Chiron's life: childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. The first chapter, "Little," introduces us to Chiron as a young boy who is constantly bullied at school. He finds solace in the company of Juan, a drug dealer who takes him under his wing and becomes a father figure to him. Juan teaches Chiron how to swim and encourages him to embrace his individuality, but their relationship is complicated by Juan's involvement in illegal activities. In the second chapter, "Chiron," we see Chiron as a teenager who is still grappling with his sexuality. He is tormented by his classmates and struggles to find his place in the world. Despite this, he finds comfort in Kevin, a classmate who becomes his confidant and eventual romantic interest. However, their relationship is cut short when Chiron gets arrested after attacking Kevin's friend Terrel for bullying him. The third chapter, "Black," follows Chiron as an adult who has embraced his sexuality but struggles with loneliness and intimacy issues. He reconnects with Kevin after years of separation and reveals that he has not been intimate with anyone since their encounter years ago. Through therapy sessions with Kevin's help physically abusive mother], we see glimpses into whether or not one can truly ever be free from their past traumas before coming full circle back onto Miami Beach where it all started – facing fear head-first overcoming adversity just like any bright star would shine light upon dark waters below on moonlit nights alike guiding lost souls home safely at last – especially when you realize there’d always been family surrounding them all along no matter what form it took (Teresa/Juan).
