In 1792, Spain, the famous painter Francisco Goya (Stellan Skarsgard) gets entangled in a scandal when his teenage muse, Ines (Natalie Portman), is accused of heresy by the Spanish Inquisition and imprisoned. Goya's portrait of Ines and her family's desperate attempts to secure her release bring him into conflict with Brother Lorenzo (Javier Bardem), a ruthless Inquisitor who is determined to root out heresy and has his own dark secrets. As the Inquisition tightens its grip on Spain, Goya finds himself caught up in a web of intrigue and oppression that threatens to destroy both his art and his life.
