She-Devil

She-Devil is a 1989 American black comedy film directed by Susan Seidelman and written by Fannie Flagg and Bronte Woodard. It stars Meryl Streep, Roseanne Barr, Ed Begley Jr., and Linda Hunt. The movie follows the story of Ruth Patchett (Barr), a frumpy, overweight housewife who is desperate to please her accountant husband Bob (Begley Jr.). However, Bob falls for a narcissistic romance novelist named Mary Fisher (Streep) and starts an affair with her. Ruth becomes aware of the affair and vows revenge on both Bob and Mary. Ruth lists Bob's assets, including his home, family, career, and freedom, and plans to cross off each one after destroying it. She starts by destroying their home in a massive explosion while Bob is away at Mary's and the kids are at school. She then takes a job at a nursing home under the pseudonym Vesta Rose and befriends Mary's estranged mother Francine (Hunt). Ruth also meets Hooper (Larkin), a nurse who has worked at the nursing home for 22 years and has a considerable life savings. Ruth and Hooper form a partnership and start an employment agency for downtrodden women who have been rejected by society and need a second chance. The agency is successful, and the women Ruth has helped assist her in getting revenge on Bob. Ruth also hacks Bob's computer to conduct a gigantic embezzlement and report it to the IRS. Finally, she mails pictures of Bob bedding his secretary Olivia (Pitillo) to Mary, which effectively destroys her career. She-Devil is a dark comedy that explores themes of revenge, betrayal, greed, and power.
