All We Had is a powerful and poignant coming-of-age drama that follows the story of a resilient mother-daughter duo, Rita and Ruthie Carmichael, as they navigate their way through life's challenges. Directed by Katie Holmes in her feature directorial debut, the film is based on Annie Weatherwax's 2014 novel of the same name. The story takes place during the 2008 financial crisis, and Rita and Ruthie are constantly on the run from one place to another, searching for stability and security. After their car breaks down, they find themselves stranded in a small Midwestern town, forced to face their fears and insecurities head-on. Despite their difficult circumstances, Rita (played by Katie Holmes) and Ruthie (played by Stefania LaVie Owen) find strength in each other. They begin to work at a local diner, Tiny's, where they slowly start to rebuild their lives. One fateful night, Ruthie finds herself in a dangerous situation when she stumbles upon a group of young men trying to rape Pam, a fellow waitress at Tiny's. With the help of Marty (played by Luke Wilson), Rita chases off the attackers, but not before Ruthie threatens them with a gun. The incident serves as a wake-up call for Rita and Ruthie to confront their past traumas and fight for a better future.
