Broken Embraces (2009) is a romantic thriller directed by Pedro Almodóvar. The movie tells the story of Harry Caine, a blind writer who sharing his life with his agent Judit and her adult son, Diego. After millionaire Ernesto Martel's death, a young filmmaker Ray X appears, who turns out to be Martel's son. Harry's past starts to resurface when he takes care of Diego, who has been hospitalized due to drug overdose. The main storyline is told in flashback as Harry reluctantly tells Diego a tragic tale of fate, jealousy, abuse of power, betrayal, and guilt. The first flashback takes the audience to 1992 when Magdalena "Lena" Rivero becomes Martel's secretary, an aspiring actress who becomes his mistress later on. At this time, Harry is still living under his real name, Mateo Blanco as a well-respected film director. Lena manages to win the main role in Blanco's film Chicas y maletas (Girls and Suitcases) by bringing Martel in as financier/producer. However, Martel spies on Lena and Mateo, hiring a lip-reader to interpret their secret whispers during the film production. When Martel discovers their affair, he confronts Lena and pushes her down the stairs after she threatens to leave him. But when she survives the fall , he relents and nurses her back to health . The filming completed, Lena and Blanco escape Martel's hold and go on holiday together, reading in El País that Chicas y maletas received terrible reviews, likely ending Blanco's directing career. Fate intervenes when Blanco gets injured, while Lena dies in a car accident, which is also the end for Mateo’s life. He reinvents himself as Harry Caine; a blind writer living under an assumed name mateo blanco
