...en intrikat spionfilm som i slutändan koncentrerar sig mer på människorna bakom uppdraget än på agenter med superhjältekvaliteter.

What is Wasp Network about? Toggle content

In the early 1990s, a group of Cuban exiles in Miami formed a secret organization known as the "Wasp Network" to infiltrate and dismantle anti-Castro groups responsible for terrorist attacks on the island. Led by Gerardo Hernández, the network included René González, a pilot who had defected to the United States, and Juan Pablo Roque, another Cuban pilot who had swum to Guantanamo Bay and asked for political asylum. The group smuggled drugs and weapons, conducted terrorist activities in Cuba, and even shot down two Cessna Skymasters from Brothers to the Rescue, killing four aviators. After months of bureaucratic procedures, Olga and her daughter were allowed to leave Cuba and rejoin René in Miami. However, before their travel, Viramontez informed Olga that her husband was not a traitor to the Castro regime but indeed a hero and a Cuban intelligence agent who infiltrated the CANF. The entire Wasp Network was eventually captured by the FBI, facing charges of conspiracy to commit espionage, murder, and other illegal activities. Despite the FBI's offer to reduce his sentence in exchange for information, René refused to cooperate. The aftermath of the Wasp Network's capture was severe. René González served 12 years in prison, while Gerardo Hernández received two life sentences. Ana Margarita Martínez sued the Cuban government and was awarded $27 million in punitive damages, but she has only collected $200,000 to this day. Juan Pablo Roque was never a pilot again and sold his Rolex on eBay. Raúl Cruz León is still serving a 30-year sentence, and Luis Posada Carriles died in 2018 without being prosecuted for the 1997 Cuba hotel bombings. The Wasp Network is a thrilling and thought-provoking film that delves into the world of espionage and the personal costs of fighting for a cause. With a talented cast and crew, the film is sure to leave audiences on the edge of their seats as they follow the stories of these brave and dangerous men and women.
