Dreyer's direction of a very precise script resulted in, quite obviously, one of the best Danish films ever made. His chilling exploration of religion and life for people living by their faith, bearing resemblance to Bergman's later work...

What is Ordet about? Toggle content

In rural Denmark, a devout widower named Morten Borgen struggles with the religious differences between his three sons and their relationships with the community. His eldest son, Mikkel, is married to Inger, who is pregnant with their third child, but their happiness is short-lived as Johannes, Morten's second son, believes himself to be Jesus Christ and wanders the farm, condemning the lack of faith in his family and community. Anders, the youngest son, falls in love with Anne, the daughter of a local church leader, Peter, who refuses to allow the marriage due to religious differences. When Inger dies suddenly, Johannes proclaims that she can be raised from the dead if the family has faith, and in a moment of desperation, Inger's daughter takes Johannes' hand and asks him to raise her mother from the dead. The family's religious differences are put aside as they witness what seems to be a miracle, and Inger sits up, alive and well. The film explores themes of faith , family, and religion in a small Danish community in the 1920s.
