Waterloo Bridge is a classic romantic drama film that tells the story of two young lovers who meet during the First World War and are separated by the circumstances of The Great War. The film opens with an older Roy Cronin, played by Robert Taylor, returning to Waterloo Bridge and recalling his memories of Myra Lester played by Vivien Leigh. The film flashes back to the beginning of their love story, where they met on Waterloo Bridge while Roy was en route to France. Despite coming from different backgrounds they fell in love and planned to get married. However, their plans are thwarted by Myra's tyrannical ballet mistress Madame Olga, who forbids her from seeing Roy. They continue to see each other in secret, but Roy has to leave for the front immediately, and wartime circumstances prevent them from getting married. Before leaving he proposes marriage and assures Myra that his family will look after her. However, when Myra learns of Roy's supposed death she becomes penniless, turns to prostitution leading to a heartbreaking end.
