The drama is expertly controlled by Lelio, lit and shot in muted and subdued colour tones by cinematographer Danny Cohen and it has a very interesting musical score by Matthew Herbert...

What is Disobedience about? Toggle content

Disobedience is a movie that tells the story of Ronit, a photographer who returns to her childhood home in North London after her father, a respected Rav, passes away. Ronit was banished from the community years ago for her behavior, which didn't conform to Orthodox culture. She is greeted with hostility by some members of the community, but her childhood friend Dovid, who is now married to her cousin Esti, invites her to stay with them. As Ronit spends more time with Dovid and Esti, she realizes that their marriage is unhappy, and they are both struggling with their own desires and beliefs. Ronit and Esti's old spark is rekindled as they spend more time together, and they share a passionate moment in a hotel room. Esti confesses that she has been unhappy in her marriage and wants out, and the two women start to develop feelings for each other. Their relationship is complicated by the fact that they are from the same Orthodox Jewish community where homosexuality is not accepted. They face challenges and criticism from the community as they explore their feelings for each other. Dovid, who is torn between his love for Esti and his duty to his community, eventually releases Esti from their marriage and publicly turns down an offer of becoming spiritual guide of the community. In the end Ronit departs for New York, but not before sharing a final kiss with Esti and telling her that she will be a brilliant mother. Esti promises to let Ronit know if she needs anything and the two women confess their love for each other. The movie ends with Ronit leaving the community, but also leaving behind a part of herself as she moves on to a new chapter in her life
