In the trenches of World War I, Captain Edmund Blackadder and his bumbling sidekick Baldrick must navigate the absurdities of war and avoid being sent "over the top" to certain death. With their eccentric superior General Melchett and incompetent comrades, they hatch schemes to escape the trenches while dealing with the harsh realities of war. As the series progresses, Blackadder becomes increasingly disillusioned with the war and its effects on the soldiers. In the final episode, the main characters are sent over the top, leaving their fate unknown. A dark comedy that critiques war and its absurdities.
