What is Chocolate about? Toggle content

Chocolate (2008) is a Thai martial arts film directed by Prachya Pinkaew. The movie follows the story of Zen (played by Yanin "Jeeja" Vismistananda), an autistic teenage girl who has developed extraordinary martial arts skills by watching TV and training with the students of a nearby Muay Thai school. Zen's mother, Zin (played by Ammara Siripong), is a former gangster's moll who is suffering from leukemia and needs urgent medical treatment. To raise the money for her mother's treatment, Zen decides to seek out her mother's old underworld contacts and collect debts that are owed to her. As Zen embarks on her mission, she faces off against members of various criminal organizations who are determined to stop her from succeeding. Along the way, she meets Moom (played by Taphon Phopwandee), a young man who becomes her friend and ally in her quest. The film features a mix of action-packed fight scenes and heartwarming moments between Zen and her mother, as well as a cast of colorful characters who add to the excitement and tension of the plot. With its unique blend of martial arts and autism advocacy, Chocolate has become a cult classic and inspired a sequel, as well as numerous other martial arts films featuring autistic protagonists.
