What is Fletch about? Toggle content

Fletch is a comedy-crime film about an investigative reporter, Irwin M. "Fletch" Fletcher, who goes undercover to expose drug trafficking on the beaches of Los Angeles. While posing as an addict, he is approached by a wealthy businessman, Alan Stanwyk, who offers him $50,000 to kill him and stage it as a burglary. Fletch agrees to the plan but becomes suspicious of Stanwyk's motives and starts investigating him instead. He discovers that Stanwyk does not have cancer and that his wife Gail recently converted $3 million of her stock into cash for her husband. Fletch travels to Provo, Utah, where he learns that the ranch Stanwyk purchased was only worth $3,000. Meanwhile, the LAPD Chief Jerry Karlin learns of Fletch's drug report and threatens to shut down his operation. The movie follows Fletch's adventures as he tries to uncover the truth behind Stanwyk's offer while avoiding getting caught by the police and staying one step ahead of his editor Frank Walker.
