When proper British parents Ken and Lorna collect their daughter Rachel from the airport, they are shocked to learn that she has married an eccentric American hippie named Cuckoo during her gap year. Despite their reservations, Cuckoo quickly wins over the family with his exuberant personality and zany antics. However, their excitement is short-lived as Cuckoo goes missing in a climbing accident in the Himalayas, leaving behind a mysterious young American claiming to be his son. As the family struggles to cope with the loss of Cuckoo, they must also navigate the challenges of raising a new baby and preparing their son for university. Will they be able to overcome these obstacles and find happiness again?
