The Emerald Forest is a 1985 adventure-drama film directed by John Boorman, starring Powers Boothe, Meg Foster, and Charley Boorman. The movie follows Bill Markham (Boothe), an engineer who moves to Brazil with his family to work on a large hydro-electric dam. During a picnic near the jungle, Bill's son Tommy (William Rodriguez) is kidnapped by an indigenous tribe known as "The Invisible People." Bill spends ten years searching for his son but to no avail. One day during the dam's construction, Bill discovers that his son, now called Tomme (Charley Boorman), has been adopted by the tribe and is living deep in the jungle. He sets out on a dangerous journey to find him, encountering cannibalistic tribes and other dangers along the way. When he finally finds Tomme, he learns that his son has chosen to stay with the tribe and has married a woman named Kachiri (Dira Paes). The tribes are threatened by the dam's construction and its impact on their way of life. Bill is torn between reuniting with his son and respecting his new family and culture. After a series of violent confrontations with the Fierce People, led by Chief Jacareh (Claudio Moreno), who seek to exploit them, Tomme becomes the new chief of the Invisible People. Bill ultimately decides to help destroy the dam to protect Tommy's adopted tribe and their way of life, but his attempt is foiled when Tomme insists that the wildlife will bring enough rain to break the dam naturally. To everyone's surprise, their efforts pay off; the dam is destroyed, flooding the surrounding countryside and sending the Markhams and their allies fleeing for their lives.
