Garland has far more on his mind than how to creatively dispatch a list of ciphers and his film is wonderfully unknowable, a crackling tension underpinning the unpredictable narrative.

...an intelligent film that asks big questions and refuses to provide easy answers. Sci-fi at its best.

Amerikansk run of the mill-action mer än skräck, där betyget väger mest på att jag trots allt ville veta vad som hände.

Det är inte ofta det kommer något i science fiction-genren som känns unikt, men i det här fallet är det så, åtminstone bitvis.

Annihilation is a thought-provoking and visually stunning science fiction horror film that follows a group of women who embark on an expedition into a mysterious and dangerous zone known as the "Shimmer." The zone is surrounded by an impenetrable barrier that has mysteriously appeared in the United States and is gradually expanding, threatening to engulf everything in its path. Lena (Natalie Portman), a cellular biology professor and former U.S. Army soldier who has lost her husband to the Shimmer's unknown forces, joins the expedition in search of answers and closure. Along with three other women - a geomorphologist, a paramedic, and a physicist - the group ventures into the Shimmer, where they encounter strange and mutated plants and animals. As they delve deeper into the zone, the group discovers that the Shimmer is not just a physical barrier but a prism that distorts and transforms everything that falls within its boundaries, including their own DNA. The film builds up to a thrilling climax as the women confront their own mortality and the true nature of the Shimmer, leading to an explosive and mind-bending finale. Annihilation features a talented cast, including Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, Cosmo Wright, David Gyasi, Victor Garber, Benedict Wong, Sonoya Mizuno, Sammy Hayman, Josh Danford, Logan Sch Humphrey, Austin Hébert, Michael Scialabba, Richard Davies, Arskal Salim, and Kumud Pant.
