Joey Evans, animateur de cabaret, arrive à San Francisco sans un sou en poche. Il rencontre par hasard son vieil ami Ned, pianiste au Club 626. Bientôt engagé par ce dernier, il devient la coqueluche des danseuses, qui rivalisent d'attentions à son égard. Seule la blonde Linda, l'amie de Ned, reste réservée. Il se met en tête de conquérir son coeur. Par ailleurs, la rousse Vera Simpson, une riche veuve, se dit prête à lui offrir le cabaret de ses rêves. Joey papillonne de l'une à l'autre. Vaniteux, arriviste, futile, charmeur, cynique, il a, a priori, les ressources suffisantes pour assumer cette situation quelque peu inconfortable. Seulement voilà, il lui faudra choisir et faire preuve de qualités jusque-là négligées...
