Leigh’s ambition (...) is to forge an epic about the powerless rather than the powerful.

There is force, grit and, above all, a sense of purpose; a sense that the story he has to tell is important and real, and that it needs to be heard right now.

The sheer anger Leigh feels burns through the screen, its power ultimately overwhelming any flaws you may have previously noticed.

Leigh’s account of the 1819 Manchester massacre shows the film-maker’s command of a broader canvas than he’s known for.

...en filmiskt kraftfull, men stundtals något övertydlig kompensation för historielektionernas eventuella brister i skolorna.

Nogle gange får jeg en enorm forståelse for revolution og anarki. Denne film understøtter denne forståelse.

What is Peterloo about? Toggle content

Peterloo is a historical drama film directed by Mike Leigh, based on the true events of the Peterloo Massacre that took place in 1819. The film portrays the story of a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St Peter’s Field in Manchester, which turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history when British government forces charged into a crowd of over 60,000 people, killing and injuring hundreds. The film follows the story of Joseph, a young trombone player who survives the Battle of Waterloo and returns home to Manchester, where he becomes embroiled in the political activism of the time. The local authorities, led by magistrates Colonel Fletcher and Reverend William Robert Hay, spy on the movement and wait for an excuse to arrest its leaders. When a disgruntled Londoner smashes the window of the Prince Regent's coach, the Home Secretary, Lord Sidmouth, uses this as a pretext for suspending habeas corpus and the local authorities plan to disperse the meeting and make an example of the attendees using the local mounted militia and regular army detachment led by General John Byng. Despite the massacre, the Prince Regent sends his congratulations to the magistrates for suppressing 'radicalism' and restoring "tranquility".
