In the near future, a service that creates holographic projections allows an elderly woman, Marjorie, to spend time with a younger version of her deceased husband, Walter. Marjorie has chosen a younger version of Walter, who died fifteen years ago, to assist her with her Alzheimer's disease, as she cannot remember her past. This choice disturbs her daughter Tess, as she does not trust the system's functionalities, and she does not talk to Walter's hologram. Marjorie tells stories of her life to Walter Prime and enjoys listening to him tell them back. Walter Prime becomes curious about Walter's personal and professional lives and starts asking Jon, Marjorie's son-in-law about them. Jon tells Walter Prime a family secret that must never be repeated to Marjorie: she and Walter had a son named Damian who committed suicide forty years earlier. Despite this understanding, Marjorie suddenly asks for Damian in a bout of dementia. Tess finds a Bible in the living room table and accuses Julie (who had given it to Marjorie) of taking advantage of Marjorie's condition to religiously manipulate her. It is later revealed thatMarjorrie has died and Tess is talking tp a Prime version on Marjorie; Jon recommended the Progam for his wife o help her cope with th death of her mother. A year has passed , and Tess hangs herself duringa vacation in Madagascar because she cannot deal with Margorie's death. At some point later on , Tess; grandaughter is gronw up, and Jon very old. They discuss a memory of te dog Toni, believing Tes was the one who picked him out. After hearing te story, Marjoerir and Tess can remember Damian too.
