What is Catch-22 about? Toggle content

Catch-22 is a dark comedy film set during World War II that follows the story of Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Force bombardier who is stationed on the Mediterranean island of Pianosa. Along with his squadron members, Yossarian is tasked with flying dangerous missions, but after witnessing the death of his friends, he begins to question the purpose of the war and seeks a way to escape. The film explores the absurdity and bureaucracy of war through the lens of Yossarian's experiences. He discovers that his commanding officer, Colonel Cathcart, has raised the minimum number of missions required for rotation home to an unobtainable 80, effectively trapping Yossarian and his comrades in a never-ending cycle of combat. Yossarian's desperation to escape leads him to try and declare himself insane, but he quickly learns that this is not a viable option. The "Catch-22" rule, as explained by Doc Daneeka, states that an airman would have to be crazy to fly more missions, but if he were crazy, he would be unfit to fly. This creates a paradoxical situation in which Yossarian is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. The film features an ensemble cast of characters, including Lt. Milo Minderbinder who becomes a capitalistic tycoon involved in black-market schemes, Major Major Major who is promoted to squadron commander without ever having flown in a plane, and Captain "Aarfy" Aardvark who commits murder to silence a girl he has raped. Throughout the film, Yossarian struggles with the moral dilemmas of war and the senseless violence that surrounds him. He is haunted by recurring flashbacks of Snowden's death and grapples with his own sanity as he tries to find a way out of Pianosa. Overall, Catch-22 is an anti-war satire that uses dark humor and surrealism to critique the bureaucracy and absurdity of war. It is based on Joseph Heller's novel of the same name and was directed by Mike Nichols.
